The Honest Guide to Boba in North Hollywood
North Hollywood is one of the largest neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley, anchored by the NoHo Arts District on Lankershim Blvd and bordered by Universal Studios Hollywood to the south in Universal City. The neighborhood has a strong theater and arts scene, a growing restaurant corridor on Lankershim, and direct freeway access via the 170 and 101. With over 190,000 residents in the broader North Hollywood area, it is one of the most populated parts of the Valley.
Dedicated boba, however, is thin in North Hollywood compared to Koreatown or the SGV. The NoHo Arts District is better known for its restaurants, coffee shops, and theater venues than for bubble tea. Chain options are available across the greater North Hollywood corridor, but the neighborhood does not have the boba density of Koreatown, Burbank, or the eastern SGV. For North Hollywood residents and Universal Studios visitors, the two practical answers are: Burbank (10 to 15 minutes north via Lankershim Blvd or the 170 freeway) for a quick, reliable stop, and Koreatown (20 to 25 minutes south via the 101 to the 110) for the full Los Angeles boba experience.
The 101 freeway south from North Hollywood also passes directly through Universal City and into Hollywood, putting Mixue's first US location on Hollywood Blvd about 15 minutes away. For Valley residents making a day trip to Hollywood, pairing Mixue with a Koreatown boba stop is the most practical way to see both in a single run south on the 101 and 110.

It's Boba Time
Burbank, Magnolia Blvd (10 to 15 min north via Lankershim or 170)

It's Boba Time is the original Los Angeles boba chain, founded in 1999, with a Burbank location on Magnolia Blvd that is 10 to 15 minutes north via Lankershim Blvd or the 170 freeway. Not the most elevated boba in the region, but dependable: consistent pearls, a reliable taro base, and pricing under $7 for most drinks. The Classic Taro Milk Tea is the essential order. Tiger Sugar
Koreatown (20 to 25 min south via 101 to 110)
The best brown sugar boba in Los Angeles and worth the 20 to 25 minute drive south from North Hollywood when the occasion calls for it. Tiger Sugar uses Okinawa black sugar rather than caramel syrup, cooks pearls fresh in small batches every four hours, and makes the cream mousse in-house. These decisions produce a drink with no equivalent in North Hollywood or anywhere close to it. Take the 170 to the 101, then the 110 south to Olympic Blvd in Koreatown. The drive from North Hollywood is shorter than from Burbank or Glendale, and the Koreatown boba corridor has no match in the Valley.

Happy Lemon
Koreatown (20 to 25 min south via 101 to 110)
The chain that introduced cheese foam to Los Angeles, with a Koreatown location 20 to 25 minutes south of North Hollywood via the 101 to the 110 freeway. Happy Lemon's Rock Salt and Cheese Oolong is still the defining cheese foam boba in LA: cold oolong tea base with savory-sweet cheese foam balanced by salt. The SGV locations in Alhambra and Arcadia are accessible via the 134 from Glendale, but for North Hollywood residents, the Koreatown location via the 101/110 is the most direct route to the cheese foam experience. Pairs well with a Tiger Sugar stop on the same Koreatown trip.

Machi Machi
Koreatown (20 to 25 min south via 101 to 110)
The only boba shop in Los Angeles built entirely around cheese foam as its brand identity. While Happy Lemon introduced cheese foam to LA, Machi Machi in Koreatown made it the entire concept: every drink on the menu is designed around the cheese foam topping. The Earl Grey with Cheese Foam is the essential order. Located in Koreatown, 20 to 25 minutes south of North Hollywood via the 101 to the 110 freeway. Pairing Machi Machi with Tiger Sugar or Happy Lemon on a single Koreatown trip gives a complete picture of what makes the K-Town boba corridor worth the drive from the Valley.
